Ons Kaapse Toer, 2023 (Deel 6): Die derde been - Vanrhynsdorp en omgewing

Op Donderdag 19 Januarie het ons vanaf Keimoes oor Kenhard, Calvinia en Niewoudtville na Vanrhynsdorp gereis. Hierdie is droë, warm wêreld en die deel tot op Calvinia is amptelik deel van die landstreek wat bekendstaan as Boesmanland. Dit is die deel waar Versamelvoëls nes maak aan telefoon- of kragpale, waar klipkoppies en droë rivierlope algemeen is en waar plase vêr van mekaar is.
Just past Niewoudtville a steep decent from the highland in the form of Niewoudtville Mountain Pass is a popular stop. The area down below and slightly northward (to the right) is known as the Knersvlakte. The Gifberg at Vanrhynsdorp is another prominent mountain in the area below, far away on the horizon to the west.

The Caravan Park at Vanrhynsdorp is another stopover we have used several times in the past. The facilities is somewhat rustic but the restaurant is known for excellent meals. We normally prefer our standard menu at night: "braai & slaai", consisting of either pork chops or beef steak on the grid with a nice mixed salad. We set up our 'hobo camp' once again. We spent the afternoon at the campsite.

We've made a booking for 3 nights to enable us to visit the area closer to the coast of the Atlantic Ocean as well as the mountains on consecutive days.

So het ons Vrydagoggend 20 Januarie die pad weswaarts gevat oor Vredendal, Lutzville tot by Strandfontein en terug oor Klawer. Ons het vantevore met ons Blommetoere in 2015 en 2019 hierdie gebied gedurende September besoek. Die oogmerk was om bietjie meer tyd te spandeer om voëls te soek en te fotografeer.

On Saturday 21 January we made our way up the Gifberg Mountain Pass. We had the area to ourselves... I don't think we saw more than 4 cars on the route for the few hours we spend on the road! This is part of the beauty of this part of the country.

That night we had a nice dinner at the ZAR Restaurant at the caravan park.

Second camp: 17 & 18 January 2023 We left Red Sands on Tuesday morning 17 January and arrived in a HOT, humid Keimoes. After setting up another 'hobo camp' (no tent, not even a roof) under a large Monkey Acacia (Apiesdoring), we visited the town to replenish some grocery items and enjoy a bit of the scenery. Ons Kaapse Toer, 2023 (Deel 8): Die vierde been - Piketberg en omgewing

Vanaf Vanrhynsdorp sou ons verskuif het na 'n klein karavaanpark by Kardoesie Padstal, net suid van Citrusdal. Dit is hoog bo-op een van die uitlopers van die Cederberge. Die weervoorspellings het egter erge wind en reën aangedui en ons het besluit om eerder verder suid te beweeg en by 'n klein karavaanpark naby Piketberg te gaan oorstaan. With this change in plan we would still be able to visit the Cederberg once the weather has improved as well as the planned day trip to Velddrift and the coastal area. On Sunday 22 January we travelled from Vanrhynsdorp on route N7 past Clanwilliam, Citrusdal and Piketberg.  Citrusdal area with Cederberg on the horizon Piekenierskloof Pass between Citrusdal and Piketberg.
