Ons Kaapse Toer, 2023 (Deel 3) - Natuurlewe by Red Sands Country Lodge, Kuruman

First camp: 15 & 16 January 2023

We arrived at Red Sands and stayed for 2 nights. It is a semi-arid area and hot. We didn't bother to put up a tent since there was no prospect of rain and it was very hot. We sat outside every evening with the stars and a few flying insects as companions.

African Plain Tiger - Melkbosskoenlapper (Danaus chrysippus)

Orange-winged Dropwing - Oranjevlerk-valvlerkie (Trithemis kirbyi), female

Thorns and pods of Camel-thorn - Kameeldoring (Vachellia erioloba)

Cape Glossy Starling - Kleinglansspreeu (Lamprotornis nitens)

Cape Ground Squirrel - Grondmeerkat of eekhoring (Geosciurus inauris)

Brubru - Bontroklaksman (Nilaus afer)

Second camp: 17 & 18 January 2023 We left Red Sands on Tuesday morning 17 January and arrived in a HOT, humid Keimoes. After setting up another 'hobo camp' (no tent, not even a roof) under a large Monkey Acacia (Apiesdoring), we visited the town to replenish some grocery items and enjoy a bit of the scenery. The Tkabies Camping site is one of our favourite stops along the N14 route in the Northern Cape. Die Hoëveld (Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Noordwes en Vrystaat) het sedert Kersfees uitstekende baie reën gehad met self oorstronings. Die Augrabies-waterval het vroeg in Januarie buitengewoon hoë watervlak gehad en ons het op Woensdag 18 Januarie die Agrabies Nasionale Park besoek. Baie van die water het egter reeds afgeloop na die Atlantiese Oseaan maar die vloei was steeds meer as 915 kubieke meter per sekonde! Dit is effektief 915,000 liter water ELKE SEKONDE... Ons Kaapse Toer, 2023 (Deel 8): Die vierde been - Piketberg en omgewing

Vanaf Vanrhynsdorp sou ons verskuif het na 'n klein karavaanpark by Kardoesie Padstal, net suid van Citrusdal. Dit is hoog bo-op een van die uitlopers van die Cederberge. Die weervoorspellings het egter erge wind en reën aangedui en ons het besluit om eerder verder suid te beweeg en by 'n klein karavaanpark naby Piketberg te gaan oorstaan. With this change in plan we would still be able to visit the Cederberg once the weather has improved as well as the planned day trip to Velddrift and the coastal area. On Sunday 22 January we travelled from Vanrhynsdorp on route N7 past Clanwilliam, Citrusdal and Piketberg.  Citrusdal area with Cederberg on the horizon Piekenierskloof Pass between Citrusdal and Piketberg. Die Bergrivier by Kleine Paradys Karavaanpark het ons die beste versameling naaldekokers sover gebied: Swartstertskepper - Eastern Blacktail ( Nesciothemis farinosa ) Oranjevlerk-valvlerkie - Orange-winged Dropwing ( Trithemis kirbyi ) Masaigesie - Masai Sprite ( Pseudagrion massaicum ) The birdlife was also very good: Jackal Buzzard - Rooiborsjakkalsvoël ( Buteo rufofuscus ) Yellow-billed Kite - Geelbekwou ( Milvus aegyptius ) Greater Flamingo - Grootflamink ( Phoenicopterus roseus ) Lesser Black-backed Gull - Swartrugmeeu ( Larus dominicanus ) Cape Teal - Teeleend ( Anas capensis ) Sacred Ibis - Skoorsteenveer ( Threskiornis aethriopicus ) Common (Steppe) Buzzard - Bruinjakkalsvoël ( Buteo vulpinus ) Well, that's all folks!
